Couples Facing Addiction | Epic Journey Recovery
WHO WE WORK WITH

When one partner gets sober, the relationship does not automatically follow.

Trust does not come back on a schedule. We work with both partners, and we are honest about what that takes.

Couples, Epic Journey Recovery

Can a relationship survive when one partner is sober and the other is not?

Some do, and some do not. What decides it is usually whether both people are willing to tell the truth about what is happening, and whether the partner who is still using wants anything to change.

One partner getting sober does not fix a relationship. It often makes things louder. Routines change, friends change, and the sober partner is doing something new every day. The other partner feels judged, or left behind, or relieved and furious at the same time. We do not pretend that sorts itself out. Preston works with the client directly, multiple times a week. Licensed therapists on our team work on communication, boundaries, and resentment that has been building for years, and there is a separate clinical team for the family. We are not a facility, and we do not treat your relationship as a clinical case.

How does Epic Journey actually work with couples?

You get a team, not a program you attend. Preston Durnford works with the client directly multiple times a week, licensed therapists on our team handle the relational work, and there is a separate clinical team for the family with Preston involved directly.

The medical side is real: blood work, QEEG brain mapping, a functional medicine workup, and psychiatry coordinated when appropriate. Epic Journey is virtual first and works with clients nationwide, with in-person sessions across Orange County plus meetups and retreat experiences. Length of engagement is individualized. We do not sell a fixed number of days. If a higher level of care is ever needed, Preston coordinates it. He built and ran clinical operations for detox, mental health, and dual diagnosis programs, and has operated treatment centers for over 11 years.

Should I stay, or should I leave?

That is your call, and nobody here will make it for you. What we can offer is steady support and a place to think it through when you are not running on exhaustion.

Resentment is normal. So is guilt, and the fear that leaving makes you the bad guy. Those get said out loud here, with a licensed therapist and with Preston, who has been sober over a decade and has personally led more than 500 interventions. Nothing is promised and no outcome is guaranteed. The practice is based in Newport Beach, it is cash pay, and it is built around privacy and discretion instead of insurance billing. Questions people ask

Is this marriage counseling?

No. Epic Journey is a concierge recovery coaching practice, not a couples therapy provider, and we do not treat the relationship itself as a clinical case. Licensed therapists on our team do relational work alongside the recovery coaching, and if what you actually want is standalone couples therapy, we will tell you that plainly.

Does the partner who is not the client get support too?

Yes. There is a separate clinical team for the family, and Preston works with family members directly. The partner who is not the identified client is not left to manage the whole situation alone.

Do you take insurance?

No. Epic Journey is cash pay, is not in network, and is not a licensed treatment facility. That structure exists on purpose, because privacy and discretion are difficult to protect once insurance billing is involved.

How long do people actually work with Epic Journey?

For couples, the pace is set around both people, not just the one in crisis. The core engagement is 90 days, and that is when the intensive work happens with the full team. Most people stay up to about six months, and after that many taper to roughly one session a week, ongoing, usually with whichever team member they connected with most.

It is not a rigid program you graduate from. The 90 days are front loaded on purpose, because that is where the assessments, the clinical work, and the family work carry the most weight.

Most of it is virtual, because it is convenient and that is how most clients work. Some clients fly out for the retreat, or the team flies to them, which is the higher package tier. In person is also available across Orange County. Most clients pay hourly or through set packages, and Epic Journey is cash pay, not a facility. Who is actually on the team?

About 12 people. It is Preston plus coaches, holistic practitioners, functional medicine, a neurologist, a psychiatrist, and licensed therapists, and collectively they have decades of experience. Preston will tell you most of his team has as much or more operating experience than he does.

Preston Durnford founded Epic Journey in 2014. He has been sober over a decade, spent 11 plus years owning and operating treatment centers, personally led more than 500 interventions, and wrote The Epic Journal, which has sold more than 30,000 copies. He built and ran a subacute detox center, a primary mental health program, and a dual diagnosis outpatient program in Southern California, then sold them.
