What it is

A virtual addiction treatment program built for the person who can't disappear for thirty days.

Most virtual addiction treatment sold online is a thin app subscription. Some video therapy. A workbook. Maybe a chatroom. That is not what Epic Journey is.

Epic Journey is a private virtual recovery coaching and care coordination engagement. We are not a licensed treatment center. We are a recovery mentorship practice. You work directly with founder Preston Durnford every week. Where licensed clinical care is needed, you also work with independent contracted providers that Preston coordinates with as the quarterback of your team. Not as your clinician. As the person who knows your full picture and makes sure the team is working together.

1

Emotional Processing

The thought, emotion, reaction loop. Inner child work. Mirror work. Custom journaling that surfaces what has actually been driving the use.

2

Accountability

Weekly 1-on-1 video sessions. Mid-week phone or text check-ins. Real-time pattern interruption. A relationship, not a workbook.

3

Bonding

The work only holds when the bond is real. Built on video, then deepened in Newport Beach or wherever you are when the time is right.

4

Education

The neurobiology of addiction. The thought-emotion-reaction wiring. What the substance has actually been doing for you and how the brain rewires.

5

Daily Practice

Movement. Spirituality if it fits you. Sleep, nutrition, the small rituals that hold sobriety in place between sessions.

6

Clinical Team Coordination

Epic Journey coordinates an independent network: licensed therapists, functional medicine, qEEG, ketamine partners, nutrition, fitness, family work. They deliver the licensed care; we quarterback.

The contracted clinical team

A full recovery team behind every Epic Journey client.

This is what separates Epic Journey virtual addiction treatment from solo recovery coaching. Preston is the mentor and quarterback. Around him is a vetted network of independent licensed providers, each chosen because they actually know what they are doing and treat clients the way Preston would want his own family treated. All clinical providers are independent contractors. You contract directly with each one. Preston coordinates the team.

Our process

From the first call to the long arc. Here is how it actually works.

This is the structured Epic Journey pre-assessment and engagement flow. It is the same flow whether you are 100% virtual or whether you eventually fly out for in-person time. Built across multiple meetings so we know exactly what we are doing before we start.

1

Free 30-Minute Consult

We get on the phone. You tell me what is going on. I ask questions. We figure out together whether virtual addiction treatment with Epic Journey is the right fit. No pressure. Real conversation.

2

Pre-Assessment: Meeting 1

If we move forward, we do a structured pre-assessment across two to three sessions in the first ten days. Meeting 1 maps your full history: substance use, medical history, mental health, family of origin, current life circumstances.

3

Pre-Assessment: Meeting 2

Meeting 2 goes deeper into the patterns underneath the behavior. What the substance has been doing for you. What you are afraid will happen if you stop. What you want your life to look like if we get this right.

4

Pre-Assessment: Family Check-In

If appropriate, we do a separate family check-in with your spouse or chosen family member. You are present and consenting. We hear their perspective. They hear the plan. Boundaries are clear from day one.

5

Clinical Team Activation

Based on the pre-assessment, I activate the right specialists from the Epic Journey clinical network. Functional medicine doctor for labs. Licensed therapist for trauma work. Ketamine if appropriate. Nutrition and fitness coordination. You contract directly with each provider.

6

Weekly Engagement Begins

Weekly 60 to 90 minute 1-on-1 video session with Preston. Mid-week phone or text check-in. Daily practices between sessions. Monthly clinical team touchpoints.

7

Optional Bonding Weekend

About four to six weeks in, most clients fly out to Newport Beach for a two to three day in-person bonding weekend. Optional but recommended. Preston also flies to clients when the engagement calls for it.

8

Ongoing Monthly Family Check-Ins

Structured monthly family check-ins continue throughout the engagement. Keeps your spouse or chosen family in the loop in a healthy, boundaried way without violating your confidentiality.

9

Integration & The Long Arc

After the three-month foundation, the cadence tapers as life stabilizes. Many clients stay engaged for six to twelve months. Some stay for years. The relationship continues as long as it serves you.

Frequently asked questions

Virtual addiction treatment, answered.

What is virtual addiction treatment?
Virtual addiction treatment is a remote model of recovery support delivered through video sessions, phone, text, and asynchronous tools. At Epic Journey, virtual addiction treatment means private 1-on-1 recovery coaching with founder Preston Durnford plus a contracted clinical team that includes a licensed therapist, functional medicine physician, optional qEEG brain mapping, ketamine-assisted therapy partner, nutrition coach, personal trainer, and family therapist. It is designed for clients who do not require inpatient detox but who do need ongoing accountability, mentorship, education, and a real plan.
Who is virtual addiction treatment for?
High-performing professionals, executives, founders, surgeons, attorneys, professional athletes, parents who cannot leave their family for 30 days, and anyone recently discharged from inpatient or residential treatment who needs continuum-of-care support. It is also a strong fit for someone whose use has not yet escalated to medical crisis.
What therapeutic modalities does Epic Journey use?
Preston Durnford's direct coaching draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy principles (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy principles (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems (IFS) inspired work, inner child work, mirror work, mindfulness, and custom journaling. Through contracted licensed clinicians, Epic Journey coordinates trauma-focused therapies including EMDR, brainspotting, and somatic experiencing. Functional medicine, peptide therapy, hormone optimization, ketamine-assisted therapy, nutrition coaching, and personal training are all available through the contracted network.
Does Epic Journey do blood testing and lab work?
Yes, through our contracted functional medicine partner. A full panel includes hormone levels (testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, DHEA, thyroid), comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid panel, inflammation markers (hs-CRP, homocysteine), gut and microbiome testing where indicated, micronutrient and vitamin status, and neurotransmitter precursor testing. We use the labs to identify biological drivers of mood and craving that talk therapy alone cannot address.
Does Epic Journey do qEEG brain scans?
Yes, through a contracted qEEG / brain mapping provider, available virtually or in person at our partner facility in Costa Mesa, California. A qEEG (quantitative EEG) maps the electrical activity of your brain and identifies patterns associated with attention deficits, anxiety, depression, trauma signatures, and substance-use damage and recovery. It provides objective neurological data to inform the work.
What about plant medicine and ketamine?
When clinically appropriate and the client is interested, Epic Journey coordinates ketamine-assisted therapy through contracted clinical partners. Ketamine is currently legal in the United States for off-label use under physician supervision. For plant medicines (psilocybin, MDMA, ibogaine, ayahuasca), we provide preparation and integration coaching around legally-administered experiences only. Epic Journey does not administer or recommend illegal substance use.
Do you do family therapy and family check-ins?
Yes. Through contracted licensed family therapists for clinical family work, and through structured monthly family check-ins coordinated by Preston with the client present and consenting. The family check-in process is designed to keep your spouse or chosen family member supportively informed without violating client confidentiality.
Does Epic Journey work with nutrition and fitness?
Yes. Contracted nutrition coach for personalized eating, blood-sugar stabilization, neurotransmitter precursor support, and recovery fueling. Contracted personal training and movement programming for strength, conditioning, sleep regulation, and the neurobiological benefits of consistent exercise on dopamine, BDNF, and mood.
How much does Epic Journey virtual addiction treatment cost?
Cash-pay only. Virtual recovery coaching engagements typically run between $15,000 and $25,000 for a three-month program, depending on intensity and add-ons. Optional add-ons (functional medicine labs, ketamine-assisted therapy, qEEG, licensed therapist sessions, retreats) are billed separately by the contracted providers. Epic Journey does not accept Medicare, Medi-Cal, or state insurance for coaching services. Treatment placement clients we refer to inpatient facilities may use PPO/HMO insurance through those facilities. Final pricing is discussed on the free initial consult.
Is Epic Journey a licensed treatment center?
No. Epic Journey is a private recovery coaching, mentorship, and advocacy brand founded by Preston Durnford. Preston is not a licensed clinician. Epic Journey does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe medication. All licensed clinical care (therapy, medication management, ketamine administration, functional medicine) is delivered by independent licensed providers we coordinate with as an extended team. Preston serves as the recovery mentor and quarterback for each client.
Will my employer find out if I work with Epic Journey?
No. The Epic Journey engagement is fully private and confidential. Your employer, your colleagues, and anyone outside your designated family contacts will not be informed of your participation. Payments are processed under a discreet business descriptor on your statement. There are no insurance claims filed for our coaching services, which means no insurance company has a record. Confidentiality is one of the main reasons high-performing executives and professionals choose virtual recovery coaching over traditional treatment.
Can I keep working while in the Epic Journey program?
Yes. The entire program is designed around clients who cannot stop working. Weekly 1-on-1 video sessions are scheduled around your calendar, typically 60 to 90 minutes. Mid-week check-ins are by phone or text and take 5 to 15 minutes. Most clients work full-time throughout the engagement. The optional Newport Beach bonding weekend is a 2 to 3 day trip you choose when it fits your schedule.
How is Epic Journey different from working with a therapist?
A licensed therapist provides clinical psychotherapy under their licensure. Epic Journey provides recovery coaching, mentorship, and care coordination by someone who has spent eleven years in operational recovery work with three thousand clients. Coaching focuses on present-day behavior change, accountability, daily practices, real-time pattern interruption between sessions, and coordinating your entire care team. Therapy focuses on deeper clinical processing of trauma and mental health diagnoses. Most Epic Journey clients work with both: a licensed therapist on our network for the clinical work, and Preston for the coaching and quarterback role.
How is Epic Journey different from AA or 12-step programs?
AA and other 12-step programs are free, peer-led, group-based recovery fellowships that have helped millions of people. They work best for people who can attend regular meetings, do the steps, and find a sponsor. Epic Journey is private, paid, 1-on-1, and designed for high-performing clients who need a structured personalized plan, professional care coordination across a clinical team, and the discretion that group meetings cannot provide. Many Epic Journey clients also attend AA or other groups. The two complement each other.
What happens if I relapse during the program?
Relapse is not treated as failure. It is treated as information. If you relapse during the engagement, we do a structured debrief, identify what triggered it, adjust the plan, and continue. Epic Journey does not terminate clients for relapse. The work is to understand the pattern so it stops repeating. If a relapse signals that a higher level of care (medical detox, residential treatment) is appropriate, we will arrange that placement through our treatment placement network.
Do you treat process addictions like gambling, sex, eating disorders, or shopping?
Yes. The neurological pattern underneath process addictions is identical to substance use disorder: a dysregulated reward and stress loop. The Epic Journey methodology applies directly. We have worked with clients on gambling, sex and pornography compulsions, food and eating disorders, compulsive shopping, gaming, and work addiction. For severe eating disorders or any condition requiring medical stabilization, we coordinate higher level of care first.
Can I work with Epic Journey if I am in a different country or time zone?
Yes. Preston has clients in Europe, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Asia, and across the United States. Sessions are scheduled around your time zone. The Newport Beach bonding weekend is optional and travel logistics can be coordinated. For international clients who want in-person time, Preston travels to the client. The contracted clinical providers in our network may have geographic licensure limitations; we screen for fit during the pre-assessment.
What is Preston Durnford's background?
