Union Worker Addiction Help | Epic Journey Recovery
WHO WE WORK WITH: UNION TRADES

Recovery for Union Tradespeople and Their Families

The injury came first. The pills came after, and now the thing at risk is your card, your book, and your family.

Union Workers, Epic Journey Recovery

Can I get help for opioid dependence without my local or my employer finding out?

Yes. Epic Journey Recovery is cash-pay, so nothing is billed to insurance and no claim is created. It is an independent private practice with no affiliation with any union, local, trust fund, or employer, and no reporting relationship with any of them.

MAP and EAP programs work for plenty of people, and they are worth using if you trust them. Some tradespeople do not, because using them means telling someone on the inside.

This is the other option. You pay for it yourself, and the people who know are the ones you tell. The practice is based in Newport Beach, California, and it is virtual first, so most of the work happens on a screen instead of in a parking lot where your truck gets recognized.

What does this look like if I cannot stop working?

It works around your schedule and it does not require a bed. Epic Journey is not a facility. It is virtual first and available nationwide, with in-person work across Orange County plus meetups and retreat experiences.

You work with Preston Durnford directly multiple times a week and with a licensed therapist multiple times a week, plus hourly sessions as needed. Behind them is a team of 12: coaches, holistic practitioners, functional medicine, a neurologist, a psychiatrist, and licensed therapists.

Length is individualized. Nobody hands you a fixed program off a shelf. If a higher level of care is ever needed, Preston coordinates it. He has operated treatment centers for over 11 years and has personally led more than 500 interventions.

I got hurt on the job and the pain pills got out of hand. Where do I start?

Start with a consultation, then with data instead of guesswork. Early work includes blood work, QEEG brain mapping, and a functional medicine workup, so what is happening in your body and your brain is on paper before a plan gets built. Psychiatry is coordinated when appropriate.

If this began with a real injury and a legitimate prescription, that is treated as medical history, not a character flaw.

Your family is not an afterthought. They get their own clinical team, separate from yours, and Preston works with them directly. Book a confidential consultation when you are ready to talk.

Questions people ask

Does Epic Journey Recovery take insurance or a health and welfare fund?

No. Epic Journey Recovery is a cash-pay practice and does not bill insurance or any benefits fund. That is the point of it: no claim, no prior authorization, and no paperwork trail through a plan.

Is Epic Journey Recovery affiliated with any union, local, or MAP program?

No. Epic Journey Recovery is an independent private practice in Newport Beach, California, with no affiliation or endorsement from any union, local, MAP, or employer. It is a recovery coaching practice, not a licensed treatment provider or a facility.

What happens if I need detox or a higher level of care?

Preston Durnford coordinates it. He built and ran clinical operations for a subacute detox center, a primary mental health program, and a dual-diagnosis outpatient program in Southern California, and has operated treatment centers for over 11 years. Epic Journey has no beds of its own.

How long do people actually work with Epic Journey?

If you are working, the schedule has to survive a full week on the job. The core engagement is 90 days, and that is when the intensive work happens with the full team. Most people stay up to about six months, and after that many taper to roughly one session a week, ongoing, usually with whichever team member they connected with most.

It is not a rigid program you graduate from. The 90 days are front loaded on purpose, because that is where the assessments, the clinical work, and the family work carry the most weight.

Most of it is virtual, because it is convenient and that is how most clients work. Some clients fly out for the retreat, or the team flies to them, which is the higher package tier. In person is also available across Orange County. Most clients pay hourly or through set packages, and Epic Journey is cash pay, not a facility. Who is actually on the team?

About 12 people. It is Preston plus coaches, holistic practitioners, functional medicine, a neurologist, a psychiatrist, and licensed therapists, and collectively they have decades of experience. Preston will tell you most of his team has as much or more operating experience than he does.

Preston Durnford founded Epic Journey in 2014. He has been sober over a decade, spent 11 plus years owning and operating treatment centers, personally led more than 500 interventions, and wrote The Epic Journal, which has sold more than 30,000 copies. He built and ran a subacute detox center, a primary mental health program, and a dual diagnosis outpatient program in Southern California, then sold them.
