Most people who reach out to Epic Journey for virtual addiction treatment are not in crisis. They have a career. They have a family. They have a life people look at and admire. What they have is a relationship with a substance that has quietly stopped working in their favor. And they need someone to walk them out of it without burning the whole life down.
I'm Preston Durnford. I run Epic Journey. For more than eleven years I've worked with over three thousand people, in person and virtually, across detox, residential, mental health, and outpatient program operations. What I built here is the model I wish existed when I started this work. It is private, it is personal, and it does not require you to fly to a treatment center and disappear for thirty days.
This is what virtual addiction treatment actually looks like at Epic Journey. Who it's for. Who it's not for. The contracted clinical team behind it. And how the whole thing fits together.
What virtual addiction treatment actually means here.
Most of what is sold as "virtual rehab" online is a glorified app subscription. Some video therapy. A workbook. Maybe a chatroom. That is not what we do.
Epic Journey virtual addiction treatment is a structured three-month engagement built around six pillars. You work directly with me on every one of them, and where licensed clinical care is needed, you work with an independent contracted provider that I coordinate with as your quarterback. Not as your clinician. As the person who knows the whole picture.
Emotional Processing
The thought, emotion, reaction loop. Inner child work. Mirror work. Custom journaling that surfaces what's actually been driving the behavior.
Accountability
Weekly 1-on-1 sessions, mid-week check-ins by phone or text, and real-time pattern interruption. Not a workbook. A relationship.
Bonding
The work only lands when the bond is real. We build it on video, and where it serves you, in person in Newport Beach or wherever you are.
Practices
Daily rituals. Movement. Spirituality if you want it. Sleep, nutrition, and the small habits that hold sobriety in place between sessions.
Education
Understanding the neurobiology of addiction, what the substances were actually doing for you, and how the brain rewires when you give it the right conditions.
Clinical Team
Contracted licensed therapist, functional medicine, ketamine-assisted therapy, nutrition, fitness. All coordinated through me as your single point of accountability.
The six pillars are not a checklist. They are a system. Each one reinforces the next. The accountability holds the practices in place. The practices regulate the body so the emotional processing can actually happen. The clinical team takes care of what is beyond coaching. The bonding is what makes any of it durable.
Who virtual addiction treatment is for.
This work is built for a specific kind of client. Honesty about that upfront saves everyone time.
Virtual addiction treatment at Epic Journey is for you if:
- You're a high-performing professional, executive, founder, surgeon, attorney, athlete, or parent who cannot disappear for thirty days.
- You have completed inpatient or residential treatment and need ongoing structured support during integration. This is the phase where most relapses happen and the phase most treatment centers do not adequately cover.
- Your use has not escalated to medical crisis but you know it's heading there if you don't change course.
- You need accountability. You know what to do, or you think you do, but knowing isn't the same as doing.
- You want to work with someone who has been where you've been, not someone who studied it in a textbook.
- Privacy is non-negotiable. You are not going to walk into a room of strangers and announce who you are.
- You live outside California or outside the United States entirely. Epic Journey works with clients globally.
Virtual addiction treatment is NOT for you if:
- You are in active medical crisis or at risk of severe withdrawal. You need a medically supervised detox first. We help with that placement before we begin coaching.
- Your environment is not safe for sobriety. If staying where you are means you cannot get sober, virtual work cannot fix that. You may need residential first.
- You're looking for someone to fix you. The work only lands if you bring honest effort to it. That is non-negotiable.
The contracted clinical team.
This is what separates Epic Journey virtual addiction treatment from a pure coaching relationship. I am the recovery mentor and the quarterback. Around me is a vetted network of independent licensed and credentialed providers, each one chosen for the same reason: they actually know what they are doing, and they treat clients the way I would want my own family treated.
Clinical Psychotherapy
Contracted licensed therapists for trauma work, family-of-origin material, EMDR, CBT, DBT, and any clinical processing that is beyond coaching.
Body Biology & Labs
Contracted functional medicine physician for full panel labs, hormones, gut, inflammation, nutrient repletion, peptide therapy when clinically indicated.
Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
Contracted clinical partners for legally administered ketamine-assisted therapy when clinically appropriate. Preparation and integration provided by Epic Journey.
Nutrition & Performance
Contracted registered dietitian or nutrition coach for personalized eating, blood-sugar stabilization, neurotransmitter precursor support, and recovery fueling.
Strength & Conditioning
Movement protocol design and accountability. Training discipline is one of the strongest single predictors of long-term sobriety in our clients.
Optional Brain Scan
Contracted brain-mapping providers for qEEG baseline (virtual or in-person Costa Mesa) when objective brain data informs the work.
All clinical providers in the Epic Journey network are independent contractors. They contract with you directly for their work. I coordinate the team, but I do not deliver licensed clinical care, and I am not a covered medical entity. That distinction is what makes the model work. You get the mentorship and quarterback from someone with eleven years and three thousand clients of operational experience, and the clinical care from the licensed professionals who specialize in it.
How a typical week actually looks.
Concrete is more useful than abstract. Here is what a normal week in Epic Journey virtual addiction treatment looks like, once the engagement is rolling.
Monday: Weekly 1-on-1 with Preston
60 to 90 minute video session. Open with what's alive for you, walk through the week behind us, identify what surfaced, and set the focus for the week ahead. Custom prompt or journal exercise assigned at the end.
Tuesday or Wednesday: Optional therapist session
If you've added a licensed therapist to your engagement, your standing session typically lands here. We coordinate directly with the therapist on focus areas.
Thursday: Mid-week check-in
Phone or text. Quick pulse on the week. What's working, what's tightening up, what came up since Monday. Five to fifteen minutes, sometimes longer if needed.
Daily: Practice
Movement, journaling, prayer or meditation depending on your tradition, sleep discipline, food, and the custom prompts that surface what's underneath. The practices are what bridge the sessions and they're where most of the actual rewiring happens.
Monthly: Add-on touch points
Lab review with the functional medicine physician if you've enrolled. Nutrition check-in. Fitness programming review. Ketamine session and integration if part of your protocol.
The Newport Beach bonding weekend.
About four to six weeks into the engagement, most clients choose to fly out to Newport Beach, California for a two to three day bonding weekend. This is optional but recommended. There is something the work does in person that it cannot do on video alone.
We meet at a quiet curated location near the coast. We do deeper sessions in person. We surf or hike or train, depending on what fits the client. We share meals. We meet other men in the Epic Journey men's recovery group if the timing aligns. The trip lasts long enough to deepen the bond and short enough not to disrupt the client's life.
For international clients, we can structure the trip around the schedule and arrange any logistics on this end. I have worked with clients in Europe, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Asia.
When the engagement calls for it, I also fly out to the client. I have done sessions in private homes, hotels, ranches, sober living houses, and in one case a yacht. The format follows the work, not the other way around.
How effective is virtual addiction treatment?
The research on virtual and telehealth-delivered addiction treatment is now strong enough that this is no longer a fringe modality.
- A 2020 meta-analysis in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment found telehealth-delivered substance use disorder interventions produced outcomes comparable to in-person care for non-acute populations.
- A 2022 JAMA Psychiatry study on telehealth treatment for opioid use disorder during and after COVID-19 found equivalent retention and abstinence outcomes versus traditional in-person care, and meaningfully better access for rural and underserved populations.
- A 2023 NIAAA review of telehealth for alcohol use disorder concluded that virtual treatment is "non-inferior" to in-person across most studied measures, and superior on engagement and retention for specific populations including high-functioning professionals.
- The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) updated its clinical guidance in 2023 to formally support virtual and hybrid delivery models for the appropriate level of care.
The critical phrase across all of that research is "non-acute populations." Virtual addiction treatment works for the person who is medically stable, motivated, and has a safe environment. For someone in active medical crisis, virtual is not the right starting point and Epic Journey will say so on the consult.
What this is not.
I am not a licensed clinician. Epic Journey is not a treatment center, a rehab, or a covered medical entity under HIPAA. We do not diagnose, treat, prescribe, or administer medication. We do not provide twenty-four hour supervision or detox.
What we provide is private recovery coaching, mentorship, and advocacy with an extended clinical team of independent licensed providers we coordinate with. That distinction is intentional and is exactly why high-performing clients choose this model over both traditional treatment centers and standalone coaching apps.
How to start working with us.
Every Epic Journey engagement begins with a free initial consult. We get on the phone for thirty to forty-five minutes. You tell me what's going on. I ask questions. We figure out together whether virtual addiction treatment with Epic Journey is the right fit. If it is, we move to a written engagement and start. If it isn't, I tell you what I would do instead.
There is no pressure on the consult call. It is a real conversation. The clients who do best in this work are the ones who came in clear about what they wanted, and the consult is where we get clear together.
